Scenario
The city of New Rome faces a duel between talented artist Caesar Catiline and greedy mayor Franklin Cicero for a utopian future. Pre-production began in 2001 after 30 hours of second-unit footage and desk work with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Eddie Falco, and Kevin Spacey. The project was scrapped after the September 11 attacks due to a scene in the script (p. 166) being “prophetic.” Coppola abandoned the project entirely in 2007 and did not begin development again until 2019.

Francis Ford Coppola’s “Masterpiece” Incredibly unique and delicious
Anyway, what a disgusting nightmare; Or maybe a fever dream is more accurate. The problem is the execution of these ideas and the dialogue that ties them together. I’m obsessed with the idea of a new Rome and all these half-Roman characters plotting against each other like in Shakespeare’s Game of Thrones. But when you listen to Adam Driver quote a quote from Hamlet, you immediately think “in the clrrrrrb”; And Jon Voight says “boner” in Unforgivable.
That being said, I’ll probably succumb to an additional viewing of Megalopolis, I’m sure the experience is exhausting
I roughly understand the story of Megalopolis, but can’t even begin to imagine why any of the characters do anything they say or do. The amount of talent wasted on what should be the most beautiful and visually stunning setting is disrespectfully baffling.
