Devices in an enterprise environment may receive these updates more slowly or use the long-term support guidelines, which only receive critical updates such as security patches during the extended ten-year support period. One of the highlights of Windows 10 is its support for Universal Apps, an extension of Metro-style apps first introduced in Windows 8. Universal apps can be created to run on multiple Microsoft product families with nearly identical code, including PCs, tablets, smartphones, embedded systems, Xbox One, Surface Hub, and Mixed Reality.

The Windows user interface has been overhauled to allow transitions between a mouse-centric interface and a touchscreen-optimized interface based on available input devices, especially on 2-in-1 PCs, both interfaces feature an updated Start menu that features traditional Windows 7 elements. Windows 10 also introduced the Microsoft Edge web browser, a virtual desktop system, a window and desktop management feature called Task View, support for facial recognition and fingerprint sign-in, new security features for enterprise environments, and DirectX 12.
