Sawyer’s character was originally intended to be an older, slick, dress-wearing city street artist from Buffalo, NY. However, when Josh Holloway forgot a line in his audition and then kicked a chair in frustration and swore loudly, the writers liked the edge he brought to the Sawyer character, and decided to write Sawyer as a more Southern, dark drifter instead.
